Theoretically Speaking

This excerpt was created in the absence of an abstract.

In a world devoid of practical concerns, we could gather our knowledge unrestrained. We might even find the opportunity to reflect on every new bit of knowledge and how it fits into a unifying theme. But that is not the world we live in, and it is particularly not the world we physical therapists live in. Our profession grew out of the pragmatic need to rehabilitate injured soldiers and has thrived meeting similar practical concerns. We take pride in our abilities to do things, and we often look askance at those who seem to spend excessive time pondering when there is work to be done.

In contemplating the dynamic tension that exists between practical and theoretical concerns, there is a temptation to make the analogy to the duality of the yin and the yang of Chinese culture, the balance of light and dark, masculine and feminine, negative and positive....
